The Esherick house is one of the first residential designs Kahn constructed illustrating its formal ideology after his return to the United States from Rome, after being appointed there a member of the American Academy in 1953. The project was commissioned by Margaret Esherick, single woman. It is located in the neighborhood of Chestnut, in Sunrise Lane, near Millman Street, northwest of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
